Development and characterization of high-performance nanocomposite coatings deposited electrophoretically on metallic substrates

Despite the important efforts made in improving Ti-alloy prostheses performance, factors such as osteointegration deficiency and stress shielding prevail, which may even cause surgical reintervention. Prostheses performance is dependent upon the material surface micro and nanostructure and bioactivity. In this context, coatings deposited by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) are an attractive strategy to modify the materials surface [1, 2]. The aim of this project is the development of hybrid nanocomposite coatings based on polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and inorganic nanoparticles on Ti-alloy (and stainless steel) substrates, given special attention to the surface microstructure characteristics, the interaction between the nanocomposite layers and the metallic substrate and the bioactivity of the coatings.
