The main aim of this project is the development of a working “cardiac patch” involving the use of novel biodegradable materials, MCL-PHAs (medium chain length polyhydroxyalkanoates) and a conducting polymer. Amongst polyhydroxyalkanoates, MCL-PHAs are excellent candidates for cardiac patch development due to their highly elastomeric and flexible material properties along with high biocompatibility. The developed patches will have nanotopography and growth factors to promote myocardial regeneration. Cardiomyocytes will finally be used to study the efficiency of cardiac tissue regeneration on the patches.
